Increased size limit for the eBay Basic uploaderThanks To Augy From eBay For This TutorialWe, eBay, have increased the maximum file size of pictures uploaded in the Sell Your Item form using eBay Basic Picture Services from 1.2MB to 2.0MB. There is no change to uploads from eBay Enhanced Picture Services (ActiveX software installation required) and Turbo Lister, which already handle pictures with virtually unlimited file sizes. (See Picture Services Overview for a description of eBay Picture Services). We have made this change as a convenience to sellers using newer-model digital cameras who have no software installed on their computers for reducing the size of high resolution original pictures before they upload them to eBay. Note that uploading a 2.0 MB file on a 56K dialup modem can take 5 minutes or more. Picture Sizing Recommendations for eBay Picture Services.eBay Enhanced Picture Services and Turbo Lister resize and compress pictures to eBay's standard sizes on your own computer before uploading them to eBay's servers. Regardless of your camera's resolution settings, you can load your pictures with Enhanced Picture Services and Turbo Lister without concern for file sizes. eBay Basic Picture Services performs the same resizing and compression, but does so on eBay's servers after your pictures are uploaded. If your image files are larger than the new 2.0MB limit, you must reduce the size of your picture files to 2.0MB or less before you upload. Otherwise, the upload will fail with an error message after the upload size limit is reached. You don't need high camera resolution for eBay. It is useful to understand that the full resolution of modern digital cameras is unnecessary for achieving excellent quality of pictures displayed on a web page. The additional resolution of high-megapixel cameras only benefits the printing of large, high-quality prints. Therefore, for pictures to be used on eBay and uploaded with Basic Picture Services, you can upload more efficiently by selecting an appropriate camera resolution setting before you take your pictures. We recommend a setting that produces original pictures of 1024x768 pixels (a common size) or some values close to that. Pictures of that size provide ample image data for producing high-quality pictures when resized and compressed to the eBay standard sizes by eBay Picture Services. The file size of a 1024x768 resolution JPEG-format picture generally ranges between 300-600KB, well below the upload limit for Basic Picture Services. Consult your camera manual for instructions on how to set picture resolution. What if pictures are too large? If you take pictures at higher resolution and produce file sizes greater than the 2.0MB limit for Basic Picture Services, you should use Enhanced Picture Services to upload if possible (newer versions of Windows with Internet Explorer required). If not, then you will need to install and use an image processing software program to pre-process your pictures before uploading with Basic Picture Services. Many eBay members recommend the free IrfanView program for Windows computers, though many cameras are sold bundled with image processing software on a CD. For more experienced users, high-end graphics programs, such as Photoshop, can also be used for the simple picture resizing needed to reduce file sizes. How to resize for Basic service: Pre-processing consists of resizing and resaving a new copy of each picture. For resizing, we recommend a size where the longest side of the original is reduced to about 1024 pixels (always resize proportionally to maintain aspect ratio). Most image processing programs include several resizing options. For downsizing JPEG photos, we recommend using a Lanczos or Bicubic resizing (resampling) option if those are available. After resizing or photo editing, save your downsized copy using a high JPEG quality setting (for programs that use a 0-100 quality scale, we recommend a value of around 90). Since eBay Basic Picture Services will resize and compress the picture again to produce eBay's standard sizes, if you save at too low a JPEG quality setting (too much compression) your pictures on eBay may appear blurry or washed out. In general, to preserve quality you should minimize the number of times you re-save your JPEG pictures when editing and resizing them prior to upload to eBay using either Basic or Enhanced Picture Services. Note that many image processing software programs include features for selecting multiple picture files and applying the same processing operations to all of them in one operation. Sometimes this is called "batch" processing. If you have many pictures to resize, it will be much more efficient for you to use a program that supports batch processing. ![]()
